The problem with the Illinois criminal code is that you can never find anything when you need it. There’s no official table of contents or index of the various crimes filed by prosecutors throughout the state.
Becoming familiar with the language of a crime first means finding the right section in the law. On this page, I’ve made an effort to organize the most common crimes that are filed against defendants in criminal courtrooms in Illinois. Illinois Criminal Code
The vast majority of the crimes filed against defendants are listed in the Illinois Criminal Code of 2012. Technically the Illinois Controlled Substances Act is part of the Criminal Code. So too the Cannabis Control Act is part of the Illinois Criminal Code.
The Illinois Vehicle Code also has a good chunk of traffic related offenses. After that the other sections of the code contain a crime here and there. Realistically, anything not in the Criminal Code or the Vehicle Code is rarely filed.
